The Next Day
...
They attempted to return to the nature trail and found it utterly impassable. The rabbits had grown to such a number that the entire walk was covered with them. Desmond and Morris were stunned. They tried to step through the unmoving mass of the beasts but could not find a perch to place their feet. The mass of fur and flesh and bone was completely inert. It seemed that the rabbits were in a sort of trancelike state. They just sat there or lay there unmoving and seemed to be completely unaware of their visitors."Well, this is really extraordinary" commented Desmond. Morris said nothing. He pulled out his camcorder and began filming. "When you're finished taping, let's take that straight to the police" said Morris. Desmond still said nothing but continued taping. He eventually ran out of videotape and began taking digital photos of the dumb, inert mass of beasts. Morris still said nothing. After he had used all of the tape and taken about a hundred or so photos, he just turned at look at Morris and still said nothing."Yeah, I know..." commented Desmond. "It's not possible...but your'e here, I'm here...so this is really happening. Let's leave before something happens." They turned and headed back into town, leaving the rabbits behind. Morris carefully packed the video and digital equipment in their carrying cases. Finally, he spoke..."Jesus...what the hell is going on"?
The next day Desmond called Morris and left a message for him to call. ...a couple of hours later they were walking down the nature path with the video and digital cameras. The sluggish rabbits were there again. Morris couldn't believe it. He had brought a walking stick after Desmond had told what he had experienced. The walking stick had the same effect on the sluggish rabbits. Morris commented that he may as well have brought along a cattle prod or supermodel Darla Crane.Having filmed and taken the photos, both headed back the nature trail. They noticed that the trail and the surrounding environs was quite thick with the animals. They all seemed quite mangy and unnaturally sluggish. Morris commented that they seemed like they had been put into a drug-induced stupor. You literally had to push their ragged, furry bodies out of the way...Unsettled by this, they found the car in the parking structure and headed back to Morris's place to view their recordings. You know, said Morris, we should have brought one of the damned things back with us. Desmond had other ideas and kept quiet about that. When they got back to Morris' place, they began to download their video results. It's just so abnormal, said Morris. Indeed, thought Desmond.
The Fur of Chaos
That weekend, Desmond decided to travel back to that nature trail and investigate the circumstances surrounding all of the numerous rabbit appearances - if he could find any. He decided to go the reverse path heading back to his missing friend's place. As he headed through the city to the path, he thought he saw some immediate results. The rabbits were back - or, maybe, they had never left. He thought he saw what appeared to be more of them. He kept moving along the path to investigate further. More rabbits became visible on and around the path. Then the place got thick with them. Some of them just seemed to stare plainly, munching on whatever invisible sustenance they had in their mouths. They looked as ragged and as mangy as ever. Good God, maybe its rabies...thought Desmond. He found himself fighting off a little fear. He looked for a dead branch, something convenient that he could maybe use as a deterrent or maybe even a weapon. He shortly spied a good size branch on the path. It had been denuded of all leaves and bark. It plainly looked as if it had been gnawed upon by some beast. He picked up the branch and tested the heft of it. It seemed big and heavy enough to drive away the most determined animal. He kept walking. The path soon became thick with the little beasts. They were barely moving and he actually had to begin to start stepping around them, like they were oblivious to him. He started to poke at a couple of them with the branch. They hardly paid attention to his prodding. He even began to poke harder at them. They moved with some difficulty, sluggish with no desire or anxiety to move at all. There was something unnerving about them behavior that it got to Desmond.Desmond decided he should have brought his digital camera or even a video recorder. He decided to go back home and pick up something with which he could make a visual record of this phenomena. He turned around. He found himself confronted with even more rabbits. He thought he might report this to the county authority. And pushing aside more rabbits he continued his trek back to the parking structure. He thought he might look up his friend Morris when he got back home. He might need an extra hand to help him photograph or tape this.
